Here are answers to some questions that you may have about the police levy.
1. Q: What is the total increase on every property owner's property tax?
A: The amount depends on the value of your property. For a home with an assessed evaluation of $100,000, the gross amount of the tax would be $45.50. With the 10% reduction, for which nearly every property qualifies, the amount will be $40.95. With the 2.5% reduction for owner-occupied residential property and a homestead reduction, the amount will be even lower.
2. Q: Will the amount increase each year?
A: No not for 5 years. Unless there is an increase in your property value due to an addition to your home.
3. Q: What all do we get for this?
A: 40 hours a week of a fully sworn and empowered police officer who can write tickets; make the roads safer; will be faster at getting reports taken; and will develop the knowledge required to effectively police the trouble areas within Lakengren.
4. Q: Where does the money from the tickets go? Do we get it? A: No, it goes to the funds of the Eaton Municipal Court.
5. Q: Will security be reduced if this goes through?
A: We will have to evaluate it once it's in force, but security will still be needed to write citations against our rules and regulations as the police would not be authorized to do so. Also the police will ONLY be for 40 hours a week. NOT 24 hours a day.
6. Q: Will we see a reduction in assessments if security is reduced? A: It is possible. However, more than likely, the savings will come
because we will be able to use the savings to address other areas, thereby preventing or delaying the need to ask for an increase in the assessments for the next few years.
7. Q: Would the police be able to patrol the lake?
A: Yes and to make arrests for state violations; operating under the influence; operating in an unsafe manner.
